World Veterinary Day Celebration in Nepal

World Veterinary Day 2012 was celebrated in Nepal at National level under the banner of Nepal Veterinary Association an umbrella organization of Nepalese Veterinarians. On the occasion of World Veterinary Day an interaction program was organized in Chitwan of Nepal on 27th April 2012. Veterinary and Medical physicians actively participated in the interaction program under the topic “One world one health: Antimicrobial drug resistance”. Dr. Subir Singh, Assistant Professor at Institute of Agriculture and Animal Sciences and immediate general secretary of Nepal Veterinary Association delivered theme lecture on “One World one Health”. Dr. Mukul Upadhyaya, central member of Nepal Veterinary Association highlighted on “recent pattern on use of antibiotic and trend of resistance in Veterinary Practice in Nepal”. Medical Practitioner Dr. Bhoj Raj Adhikari and neurosurgeon Dr. Benzoo Pradhan delivered talk respectively on “recent pattern of use of antibiotics and trend of resistance in medical practice of Nepal” and “Neurocysticercosis”. This was a first program of such kind where veterinarian and medical practitioners shared a common forum to discuss on common issues.

On 28th April,World Veterinary Day, a mass procession was organized at Chitwan to commemorate the world veterinary day. Senior government veterinarians, campus chief of Institute of Agriculture and Animal Science (IAAS) and Nepal Polytechnic Institute (NPI), veterinary students from IAAS and NPI, private veterinary practitioners, farmer group of Heifer International participated in a march pass rally. Elephants from Department of National Park and wildlife conservation lead the rally and was followed by a musical band from Nepal Police of Government of Nepal. The rally which kicked off from premise of District Livestock Services Office  ended up with a mass gathering at Pulchowk of Chitwan. Dr. Bimal Kumar Nirmal, President of Nepal Veterinary Association during his remarks lauded the work of country veterinarians for their effort in judicial use of these drugs in animals. He also emphasized to use such antibiotics only under the legal framework. He cautioned everybody for its probable disastrous outcome if used in injudicious manner.
